"To own a car means far more than how much mechanical grip you’ve got when you screw up in the wet. Audi R8 is the best car because it makes you stand out from the crowd WITHOUT making you look like a pornstar with complex. What you all forget is that you have to be able to park outside the diner and then enter the car without soiling the interior with ketchup! R8 is fast, as fast as most of the cars, and faster than some of them, but it is still useful. Important when you spend half of your time in traffic jam. The roads on Isle of Man is a playground for cars like this, but a part from a few weeks of the TT-races, it isn’t a race track. If you are obsessed of putting down low track times, you’re better of with a cheap diesel plus a formula car for the track to play with.. When it comes to living here and it pours down and are only one good restaurant on the island which you have to drive to, then you need a REAL car. I also happens to know that The Stig wants an R8 - thats as good as any recommendation for me.. "

Pontiac's famous tagline is "We build excitment". What does it say about the new Pontiac G8 that yesterday morning an Australian engineer driving a test car fell asleep at the wheel and piloted it down a 100-foot embankment, striking a boulder and flipping the car end over end? Well, the Pontiac G8 will surely be one of the more exciting vehicles from the brand in recent memory when it goes on sale early next year, but apparently for the engineer, 41-year-old Rolf Glenk, it wasn't exciting enough to keep him awake.

Glenk was the last in a convoy of G8s that were traveling on Highway 82 in Colorado yesterday morning when the accident happened. Being last in line, it was only after another engineer noticed their group was one short that Glenk and the totaled G8 were found flipped upside down at the bottom of an embankment. Glenk was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital and treated for minor injuries, while the G8 didn't so fare nearly as well. Glenk was also given a citation for careless driving.

Yesterday morning, in Hiawatha, Iowa, an early morning crash put a C5 Corvette coupe into a homes basement. (Apparently, it found a window to hit.) The car seems to have survived pretty well, though the hood’s going to need some work. And, of course, it’s possible that more harm will be done removing it slowly than it did entering quickly.


KCRG television of Cedar Rapids, Iowa reports that the driver, who was not injured, was taken into custody by police for operating while intoxicated.

The homeowner spent the balance of the night at a motel.

But whenever they receive the keys to their new cars from vehicle partner Audi the eyes of even these seasoned football stars start shining. Today was another such occasion: At the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board for Marketing and Sales of AUDI AG, handed their new “company cars” over to the athletes. Audi and FC Barcelona have been partners since the past football season. The favourite product chosen from the sporty model range of the brand in Ingolstadt was again the Audi Q7.

Before the official hand-over of the vehicles in Barcelona, where the DTM is staging its penultimate race on Sunday, the footballers experienced the fascination of the Audi models in a special way: They had the chance to complete a few fast laps in the new Audi R8 sports car and proved to be as sporty as safe in their driving style. No wonder, after all, the two Audi factory drivers Mattias Ekström and Tom Kristensen had shared a few tips and tricks with the footballers. The favourite for the champion’s title from Sweden and the seven-time winner of Le Mans accompanied the driver safety training which Audi had arranged for the players of FC Barcelona and chauffeured part of the team around the circuit in an Audi A4 DTM race taxi.

The footballers and the racers had already met the night before: Mattias Ekström and Tom Kristensen attended the Champions League home match of FC Barcelona against Olympique Lyon at Camp Nou, Europe’s largest football stadium. “To watch this team play together with a crowd of 80,000 was an impressive experience,“ raved football fan Kristensen after the home victory.

On October 24, the latest chapter in Nissan's storied GT-R history will officially kick off with the unveiling of the new Nissan GT-R at the Tokyo Motor Show. To help ramp up excitement (as if the barely-disguised prototypes snapped taking shots at Porsche's Nurburgring records haven't done that enough this week), the official Nissan GT-R website has been launched, and as you can see above, there's a countdown clock available for download. To help keep you entertained as you (im)patiently await the big reveal in Japan, Nissan has clickable images of each iteration of the GT-R on the site which give you factoids to mull over in the meantime.

In an interview with Automotive News, John Watts, product planning manager for American Honda’s struggling luxury-car division said that Acura is considering new models: "We will look at smaller segments," Watts said at a recent press event here. "There is potential for a coupe like the CL," which was killed after the 2003 model year.

A retractable hardtop is also under consideration. "The next three to four years will be important as we develop a clear message. We have separated r&d for the first time for Honda and Acura. This year is Acura’s first full-fledged entry into racing."

The NSX to be unveiled in 2010 or 2011 will be powered by a V10 engine. "We’ll see how people react to a 10 in the sports car and maybe move from there. Maybe instead of using V-8s, we’ll take the next step up and go to V-10s" for some of the other car lines.

The TL sedan will also be redesigned in 2009.

276kph is just the speed needed to break UK fastest speeding offence.

LONDON, England (AP) -- A rental car worker who was clocked at 276 kph (172 mph) in his company's Porsche was ordered jailed Monday for 10 weeks.

Tim Brady arrives at Oxford Crown Court on Monday to hear the verdict.

Tim Brady, 33, who was caught January 27, became the fastest speeder ever convicted in Britain. He beat the previous record -- 251 kph -- set by car dealer Jason McAllister in 2003.

Brady was caught driving the $198,000 Porsche 911 Turbo, which he took from his employer, luxury car rental firm HelpHire, authorities said.

Brady had nagged his boss to take the Porsche out the day before, but was repeatedly told no, authorities said.

Judge David Morton called the act "criminally self-indulgent."

"[You were] utterly thoughtless of the danger you might be creating for the innocent," he told Brady.

Brady, who admitted to dangerous driving, was banned from driving for three years and will have to take a new driving test before taking to the road again.

He quit his job a day after he was caught

We're going to call this one a rumor for at least a little while, but wow. We just got wind of this monster deal that would really cause a major stir in the already tumultuous world of Formula One. News of the World just reported that two-time world driving champion Fernando Alonso is leaving McLaren-Mercedes next year. While that was considered a sure thing in the wake of Stepneygate and all, the real shocker is that he isn't headed to Renault to be reunited with Flavio Briatore as expected. Instead, they have him going to Ferrari of all places. The report says that a cool $40 million was the price to secure Alonso for the scuderia. As they point out, it should be a relatively easy transition for Fernando, who has already been *ahem* studying design features of the Ferrari all season.


With current Ferrari pilot Felipe Massa headed to Toyota, Fernando will be joining current #3 in the driver's race, Kimi Raikkonen, in '08. It should make for another interesting battle over who's number one. The same article that tells of Fernando going to Maranello also bolsters the rumor that Ross Brawn will be stepping up as team manager when Jean Todt leaves at the end of the season. It's not often that the silly season starts this early, but this has been a very atypical year for the FIA and its premier racing class. We'll do some digging and see if we can find other sources to back this one up. But until then, this can only make the last three races of the season more compelling TV.

The Supervisory Board and the Board of Management of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave their approval today for the development and production of another Porsche model line. To be called Panamera, the new car will be a premium-class sports coupe with four seats, four doors, and a choice of front-mounted engines driving the rear wheels.

Scheduled to enter the market in 2009, the Panamera will be the fourth model line from the Stuttgart carmaker following the 911, the Boxster and the Cayenne. The new car’s name is derived from the legendary Carrera Panamericana long-distance race.

Production of the Panamera is to be in Leipzig, where Porsche already builds the Cayenne SUV and the Carrera GT supercar. The final decision will require further detailed talks between the Board of Management of Porsche AG and the Management of Porsche Leipzig GmbH with representatives of the employees. Porsche's total investment in the new model line, including development, will be more than 1 billion euros (approx. $1,200,000) and will come entirely from the company’s own funds. Expected sales are at least 20,000 units a year.

"The Panamera is a perfect fit for Porsche,” said Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, the President and CEO of Porsche AG. “It has all the typical DNA characteristic of a genuine sports car. In terms of performance, design, and driving dynamics, it meets Porsche's high standards in every respect. Through this sports coupe we are making our customers a highly attractive offer in the top performance segment."

Porsche will develop and build the Panamera using the company's own resources. "We will be developing a separate platform for our fourth model line at our Weissach R&D center,” said Wiedeking. “There are no plans for a joint venture with another car maker, but to ensure the profitability of this new model line we will cooperate more closely than so far with selected system suppliers."

Production of the Panamera in Leipzig would potentially create some 600 new jobs there. In the course of the project, approximately 400 more new jobs will be created at Porsche's original plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the engines for the fourth model line will be built, and at the Weissach Development Center.

Like the 911, the Boxster and the Cayenne, the Panamera will bear the "Made in Germany" stamp of quality. Domestic share of the Panamera’s overall assembled value will be approximately 70 percent.

Politicians among 79 who have taken vehicles out of Langkawi
LANGKAWI: Two prominent politicians are among several VVIPs being tracked by the Customs Department for taking luxury vehicles out of the duty-free island without paying excise duties.

They are among the 79 people who have breached Clause 21 (1) of the Customs Duty Order (Exemption) 1988 by keeping the vehicles away from the island for more than a month in a year.

Customs are seeking the help of the police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to help track down the vehicles including BMW, Mercedes Benz, Toyota and high-end motorcycles. The other cars include Proton and Hyundai.

Before tax, the prices of various models of Mercedes Benz range from RM62,193 to RM466,110. For BMWs, a 325i costs RM200,000 while a 318 costs RM103,000.

When the vehicles are taken out of Langkawi, import duty and excise and sales tax amounting to between 150.25% and 193.15% would be charged depending on the capacity of the car.

The amount of excise duties is based on the price list of vehicles fixed by the Finance Ministry’s valuation.

A Harley Davidson motorcycle is about 69% cheaper on the island.

Langkawi Customs chief Abdul Mutalib Embi declined to comment on VVIP involvement.

“I can confirm that we are working on a mechanism to check attempts to evade duties.

“We are in talks with JPJ to ensure road tax for vehicles bought in Langkawi can only be renewed on the island.

“We are also seeking police help to seize the vehicles if they spot them during roadblocks,” he said yesterday.

Abdul Mutalib said some of the vehicles were taken out of Langkawi 17 years ago and had yet to return.

“We keep track of all the duty-free vehicles that had been taken out. These cars can only be taken out of the island once owners pay up the duties.

“The older the car the lower the duty as its value would have depreciated,” he said.

So we are left with a dilemma, the first official teaser shot of the New Subaru WRX STi turns up on the web on the same day we get the most revealing spy shots from Nurburgring. In true WCF fashion we hold nothing back, so here you are all in one go.

Subaru have taken a great deal of care to keep the STi under wraps as we can see in the photos, the covers were kept on right up until the protype reached their workshop outside of the Nürburgring.

Fortunately soon after the covers were off and we can see an extremely clean STi prototype circling the Nürburgring, revealing all of the new Subaru's hottest design points. Prior prototypes were still heavily taped, and had padding stuffed around the fender flares.

Now we can see the true shape of the STi's bulging fenders, and the large air duct integrated into the side of the front bumper. The front intakes have some thin tape covering the nose slats, but the shapes that lay behind are still completely visible.

Seeing the WRX STi's more aggressive bodywork so clearly now, we can see Subaru are in a strong position to do battle with Mitsubishi's slick new EvoX. Keep an eye out over the next few days and weeks leading up it's debut in Tokyo as further official details are released.

This footage is showing a mule of the new car. Based on a 599 body it doesn't yet give away so much but at least a little of what will become the new Dino. What identifies the test car as a mule for the Dino is the engine sound, or should we say the lack of it. It clearly doesn’t sound as sharp as a F430 for example.

The Classic Dino was built between 1968 and 1976, and its name honours the founder Enzo Ferrari´s son, Alfredino “Dino“ Ferrari, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 from a muscular dystrophy. While that vintage Dino had a V6 behind the driver, the new one will be powered by a V8 with 400 bhp. Ferrari will most likely start with a Coupe, but expect a Spider later on. There is a high possibility that Pininfarina will do the design work with input from former Ferrari design boss Frank Stephenson, who now heads Fiat´s Centro Stile operation.

The Dino will be starting at approximately 100-110.000 Euros. Insiders are saying that it’s possible to sell up to 4000 Dinos annually once the car gets the green light for production. Such a figure would instantly double Ferrari´s yearly production and give the make a whole new group of customers.

Talk is also about the new Dino to be built at the Maserati factory in the city of Modena. This city is very important to the history of Ferrari, as it is the town where its founder Enzo Ferrari was born. Even if Ferrari is still denying the project, we expect to see it on the roads in 2009.

Future of superior touring sedan
The future of Mercedes' touring sedan has arrived in its concept form at last weeks 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now that Porsche has progressed immensely in developing its Panamera, Aston Martin has its luxury tourer Rapide in the works and archrival BMW showed their take on the four door coupe with the CS concept, Mercedes can not afford to lag behind.

The F 700 brings everything a luxury sedan should, it measures 5.17 meters in length and is packed to the rim with technological highlights from the Stuttgart automaker. Firstly the engine, Mercedes fitted a new 1.8 liter, forward pointing, four-cylinder DIESOTTO engine which consumes a mere 5.3 liters of gasoline per 100 km while emitting just 127 g/km of CO2. Next in line is the Pre-Scan suspension system which, as the name says, pre scans the road for uneven spots and will adjust the suspension accordingly for an even more comfortable journey.

Inside Mercedes fitted in a virtual operating assistant called the SERVO-HMI. This operating concept is the next sat-nav where you can 'discuss' the complex inputs like a navigation destination with an avatar or operate it by hand for more straight forward actions. In the rear Mercedes has introduced the Reverse seating arrangement so that the occupant can choose whether to face forward or backward.

Dynamic Ride Control on the new RS 6 can be supplemented if desired with optional three-stage damping. Saab celebrates three decades of leadership in turbocharging at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show by launching the Saab Turbo X, a driver-focused performance car that sets new standards for the brand.

This black limited edition model takes Saab ‘back to the future’ by evoking the iconic appeal of its first black 900 Turbo and introducing innovative Saab XWD technology.

It is unveiled today (11 Sept), exactly 30 years after Saab surprised the automotive world at Frankfurt when it revealed its first turbocharged model. That set a trend other manufacturers were to follow. Now Saab unleashes turbo power for the first time through Saab XWD, a cutting edge all-wheel-drive system that sets performance standards competitors will also seek to emulate.

With 400 Nm of torque from its 280 hp/ 206 kW 2.8V6 turbo engine, the Turbo X is the ultimate performance expression of the new Saab 9-3 range. Saab XWD features active management that not only splits torque delivery between both axles, but also between the rear wheels. This responsive system delivers a level of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control never seen before from Saab.

In addition to tuning of the suspension and its electronic chassis, throttle and powertrain settings, the Turbo X features distinctive styling additions that enhance aerodynamic performance.

Available in Sport Sedan or SportCombi bodystyles, the Saab Turbo X limited edition showcases the launch of Saab XWD. The order book is now open and the first customer deliveries are expected during the second quarter of next year. Each example can carry a personalized message in the main instrument display.
